Before
the Cow Elk calve, they must first wean off last year's calves who
have been with them through the almost-a-year since they were
born. This year these weanlings looked so lost and forlorn those
first few days, and we felt so sorry for them, poor things! Weaning must be terrible for those little
calf elk.
This group of six in the photos below was joined later by the seventh one
(photo above) waiting across the road while
I took these pictures. We counted six females (Cow Elk) and one male
with his first horn sprout (Spike Elk) in this
